Dr. Katerina Kikaki holds a degree from the School of Rural and Surveying Engineering – Geoinformatics Engineers of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), and a Master’s degree (M.Sc.) in Oceanography and Marine Environment Management from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). Her doctoral dissertation at NTUA focused on monitoring marine pollution (marine litter, oil spills) using satellite data and on developing state-of-the-art methodologies for their automatic detection.
The scientific results of her dissertation were published in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and received recognition from various sources. Since 2016, she has worked as a Research Assistant at the Institute of Oceanography of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), participating in several national and European research projects related to mapping the marine environment using satellite data (bathymetry, ocean color algorithms, marine optics, coastal geomorphology).
At HCMR, she has also participated in sampling campaigns and research cruises, as well as in organizing public awareness and educational activities focused on the marine environment. She is a member of the International Ocean Colour Coordinating Group Task Force on Remote Sensing of Marine Litter and Debris, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Oceanographers Association. Additionally, she represents Greece in the Copernicus Marine National Stakeholders Forum.
