The HSC at IEEE IGARSS 2024 for a Session on “Geology and Geophysics across the Solar System”

The Hellenic Space Center is organizing a dynamic session at the upcoming IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS) in Athens, Greece, from July 7-12, 2024. Our session, titled “Geology and Geophysics across the Solar System” (CCS.43), promises to showcase exciting results and new methods on remote sensing data analysis for solar system studies.

About the Session: Our session welcomes studies focused on the surfaces and subsurfaces of inner and outer solar system bodies such as planets, moons, and asteroids based but not limited on analyses of various remote sensing data. Interdisciplinary and comparative studies of terrestrial volcanic/tectonic systems with a strong remote sensing component are encouraged, as well as studies on terrestrial analogues that help understanding the working mechanisms of outer space bodies and vice versa.

Declaration of an Open International Tender for “Cloud-based Geoinformatics System Service”

In the context of the “Earth Observation Satellite Mission Planning Service” Project, which has been recently included in the Recovery and Resilience Fund (RRF) for Greece (OPS code TA 5201107), the Hellenic Space Center announces an Open International Electronic Tender for a Contract under sub-project (A/A 3) “Cloud-based Geoinformatics System Service”. The documentation of the Tender is available at the following link.

The HSC at the World Space Week of the UOA

The Hellenic Space Center successfully participated in the event organised by the Section of Astrophysics, Astronomy and Mechanics of the UOA Department of Physics in the scope of World Space Week, on Sunday, October 22th, 2023, at the Department of Physics in Panepistimiopolis, Zografou.

The HSC carried out an educational activity for elementary pupils, titled “Constructing microsatellites”, demonstrating how a microsatellite gets developed, including a presentation and the construction of a paper microsatellite.

The HSC team consisted of:

  • Moutsouroufi Konstantina (HSC President Secretariat and Governing Board Secretariat, Science Communication)
  • Mylonas Dimitris (HSC Scientific Personnel, Space Systems)
  • Nasi Afroditi (HSC Communications Office)
  • Farmakakis Tryfon (HSC Scientific Personnel, Space Systems)

More information about the event is available (in greek) in the Physics Department announcement and the Facebook event page.

The HSC at LIFE IN SPACE exhibition

On Wednesday, October 18, the President of the HSC, Prof. Ioannis Daglis, participated in the press conference held for the LIFE IN SPACE exhibition, which is organised by the European Space Agency (ESA), the U.S. Space & Rocket Center and its Space Camp, NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and the Italian Space Agency (ASI)

Prof. Daglis underlined that “the ability to cross the limits of the atmosphere has given us a virgin space of technological and economic development. In addition, Space, as an Earth observation platform, enables us to frequently inspect large areas of the Earth, to better understand man-made problems and space threats, such as asteroids, and to effectively protecting our planet“. Additionally, he mentioned that very soon the design of the first national fleet of microsatellites will be completed, “a very important step for the country, which will give us a strategic advantage by owning our space infrastructure“.

The exhibition is hosted at the Goudi Olympic Center, from October 19, 2023, until January 15, 2024, with a ticket purchase required for entrance.
