Visit of Minister D. Papastergiou at the HSC

On Thursday, May 30th, the Minister of Digital Governance, Mr Dimitris Papastergiou, visited the Hellenic Space Center, accompanied by the Secretary General of Telecommunications and Post, Mr Konstantinos Karantzalos. 

The Minister met with the President, Governing Board members, the Administrative and Scientific Personnel of the HSC, and was given a tour of the Satellite Reception Control Center of the HSC, followed by a demonstration of its operation and the provided satellite Earth Observation services.  

In the context of his visit, the Minister was thoroughly informed by the Management on the projects and medium-term planning of the HSC, its assistance in the implementation of the National Smallsat Program and the formulation of the National Space Strategy. The Minister expressed his satisfaction with the level of operation and efficiency of the Center.

“Switzerland – Greece Space Networking Event” to boost cooperation and create business opportunities for the two countries’ space ecosystems

On Wednesday, May 29th, 2024, the “Switzerland – Greece Space Networking Event” was successfully concluded at the residence of the Swiss Ambassador H.E. Stefan Estermann in Athens. The purpose of the event was to strengthen cooperation between and create business opportunities for the Swiss and Greek Innovation Ecosystems in the fields of space technologies, optical communications and quantum infrastructure. The event was attended by the President of the HSC, Prof. Ioannis Daglis, who addressed a greeting, as well as the CEO of the HSC, Dr. Nikos Sergis. 

The event was organised by the Embassy of Greece in Bern and the Embassy of Switzerland in Athens and took place under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Digital Governance. The event was co-organized by the Swiss Space Office (SSO) under the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation SERI, the Hellenic Space Center (HSC), the Hellenic Space Technologies and Applications Cluster (si-Cluster), the Hellenic Association of Space Industry (HASI) and the European Space Agency Business Incubator Centre Greece (ESA BIC Greece).

Presentation of “Space Physics” textbook at Eugenides Foundation

On Monday, May 20th, the presentation of the “Space Physics” textbook, organized by the Eugenides Foundation and the Hellenic Space Center, took place. The event, called “Beyond the Limits of Our Planet: The Exciting World of Space”, was attended by the former Rector of the UOA, Professor Emeritus, Dimosthenis Asimakopoulos, the Professors of the UOA Physics Department, Despina Hadjidimitriou and Elena Flokas, the Professor of the UOA Pedagogy and Primary Education Department, Alexandros-Stamatios Antoniou, the Professor Emeritus of the UOA Physics Department, Kanaris Tsiganos, as well as students and other attendees.  

The book presentation was followed by an extensive discussion with the audience. The event was recorded and is available through the Diavlos platform.

Presentation of “Space Physics” academic textbook

The Eugenides Foundation and the Hellenic Space Center are organizing the presentation of the first academic textbook on Space Physics in Greek, titled “Space Physics”. The book will be presented by Dr. Stamatis Krimizis, President of the Academy of Athens. Talks will be given by the authors of the book: 

  • Prof. Ioannis A. Daglis, President of the Hellenic Space Center 
  • Dr. Christos Katsavrias, Postdoctoral Researcher, Department of Physics, UOA 
  • Dr. Nick Sergis, CEO of the Hellenic Space Center 
  • Dr. Marina Georgiou, Postdoctoral Researcher, Department of Physics, UOA 

The event, entitled “Beyond the Limits of Our Planet: The Exciting World of Space”, will take place on Monday, May 20th, at 19:00, at the Eugenides Foundation. A discussion with the audience will follow. Entry is free and as long as there are free spots available. The event will be broadcasted live through the Diavlos platform.

HSC-NASA meeting during WHF’s “Making Space for Life”

On Tuesday, May 14th, the President of the HSC, Prof. Ioannis Daglis, met with NASA Associate Administrator of the Science Mission Directorate (SMD), Dr Nicola Fox. The meeting was also attended by: 

  • Dr Nick Sergis, HSC CEO 
  • Dr Stamatis Krimigis, President of the Academy of Athens 
  • Dr Anezina Solomonidou, HSC Officer for Space Exploration 
  • Mr. Gib Kirkham, Director of Science Division, NASA Office of International and Interagency Relations 

The meeting took place within the framework of “Making Space for Life”, an initiative co-organized by the World Human Forum and the Hellenic Space Center in Delos, Greece. During the meeting, matters of mutual interest were discussed, such as the Memorandum of Understanding between the HSC and NASA, the priorities of the SMD and the HSC, the GLOBE Program, and the Artemis Accords.

Visit of Thales delegation at the HSC

On Monday, May 13th, a delegation of Thales visited the premises of the Hellenic Space Center. The President of the HSC, Prof. Ioannis Daglis, the CEO, Dr Nick Sergis, and the HSC Science Officer for Space Systems, Dimitris Mylonas, welcomed the representatives of the Thales Group (Hellas, Cyprus, Italy, France), which consisted of:

  • Tiziano Costa – Program Manager, Thales Alenia Space – Italy 
  • Dimitra Zavali – Business Development Manager – Thales Hellas 

in order to discuss matters of common interest and to explore cooperation possibilities.

EU Sparks for Climate

Το «EU Sparks for Climate» αποτελεί μια πρωτοβουλία της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής για την έναρξη του πρώτου Ευρωπαϊκού Πρωταθλήματος Χάκαθον για πολίτες και ερευνητές. Το πρωτάθλημα Ελλάδας και Κύπρου διοργανώνεται από την Hellenic FIWARE iHub – AI Catalyst και θα διεξαχθεί μεταξύ 29 Μαΐου και 1 Ιουνίου.
